For 20 years Janice and Sue owned Caffe Astoria, a well-known Wellington institution. Hospitality is in their veins, having looked after thousands of customers over the years.
They now work as hospitality consultants. Annually they travel to Japan to lead Eating Tokyo tours.
Three years after finishing university Janice abandoned her sensible job as a public servant and looking for adventure, ran away to Japan to teach English in a town in Niigata Prefecture. Today, she valiantly has a go at speaking Japanese even though she only knows the odd phrase and question.
Nine years ago Sue made her first visit to Tokyo. She was blown away by the city and more importantly the food. With Janice, she has since visited annually, exploring different neighbourhoods and discovering some amazing eating along the way.
Our Japanese is limited but that doesn’t stop us. We will get lost at some point, guaranteed, but that’s half the fun. We will eat something we can’t identify. We love hosting guests and introducing them to Japanese food. We know where to find great food and restaurants.
